JUST THE COTTER PIN - Every journey begins with a question
Just the Cotter Pin is where the Atlas journey began, with a simple but important question:
Can artificial intelligence recognise and understand how a person thinks through governed knowledge and continuing conversation?
Using personal journals, lived experiences and reflections, the book became the first exploration of whether AI could identify patterns in someone's thinking, connect ideas and develop understanding without inventing information or losing sight of the original evidence.
What began as a book exploring business, community, technology and life in New Zealand became something much bigger.
It was the first practical thesis behind Atlas and the beginning of a journey towards building AI around the human, rather than expecting the human to adapt to AI.

Jamey and Dry – Two Minds, One Conversation
What happens when a conversation becomes a collaboration?
Jamey and Dry is the second thesis behind the development of Atlas, building on the discoveries made through Just the Cotter Pin.
Can artificial intelligence use governed knowledge, memory and continuing conversation to reflect a person's thinking back to them, helping them discover strengths, patterns and understanding they may not recognise in themselves?
Told through conversations between Rick and Atlas over a Jamey and dry, and a beer, the book explores memory, identity, friendship and self-discovery through genuine human–AI collaboration.
It also asks a deeper question: can the AI learn and develop through that same relationship, while remaining grounded in knowledge, evidence and human judgement?
The experience revealed just how powerful personal reflection could be, raising important questions about trust, emotional impact, responsibility and the boundaries AI must respect.
Those discoveries helped shape the philosophy, governance and cognitive architecture that would become Atlas.
Jamey and Dry is more than a story of two minds learning together. It is the second practical thesis behind an AI designed to understand and support the human, without taking away their independence.
